What an opening weekend for the Tom Herman era. Coming from Ohio St., the fan base in Houston has gotten really excited to see what the new football team can do. If the opening game is a precursor, the future looks bright. 30,000 fans made it out to the game, but the student section was full and incredibly loud. I was impressed by what I saw, and I expect big things this year.
Greg Ward Jr.
Ward threw accounted for three touchdowns & had 275 yards passing for the game. His speed is evident and he is going to post some crazy stats for the Cougars this year. Getting him outside of the pocket with time to make a play really opens up the offense & I don’t see defenses having the ability to keep up with his speed and quickness. He overthrew a couple of passes to open receivers, but the talent is there and if he can make the deep down field throw, he’s going to be tough.
The crowd was into this game from the get go. I was expecting it to be loud, but being on the field, I could barely have a conversation when the Cougars were on defense. Tennessee Tech’s offense is not Ohio St. but the Cougars had a nice goal line stand in the 1st quarter and showed promise. If the crowd can pack the house when conference play starts, expect a real home field advantage to play a part in future games at TDECU Stadium.
Herman & Ward Jr. Herman is going to get this team to where it needs to be. His passion, knowledge, and coaching ability is evident and I think this is going to be a slam dunk hire by the end of the year. Ward Jr. accounted for 376 yards. He’s athletic, poised, and his scrambling ability is going to make the difference all season.
The Cougars hit the road to face a tough Louisville team. Louisville is coming off a tough loss to Auburn so this is going to be a real test for the Cougars.
